"The Fault in Our Stars" by John Green

Some of the best books such as “The Fault in Our Stars” by John Green, “The Lovely Bones” by Alice Sebold, and “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee are the books being challenged because of its content. These books are interesting and capture readers and also provide useful lessons and connections in them. Challenging and banning these books will only increase its popularity. Children that have read these books have enjoyed them. Knowing that these books are three of the many teen books that are being challenged can upset them and cause debates. Teens and pre-teens shouldn't have a limit on the books they read, they should be able to read books freely and have their own thoughts and opinions on the book rather than the opinions of adults over shadowing theirs. Many books that are challenged are challenged because of its content. Although this is true, the books still get read by teens and pre-teens. When kids hear about books being banned, it may cause a debate and the popularity of the book and author may increase. In the article “The Banned Books We Have Loved”, Jen Doll states that “Banning books doesn't in fact, hurt them at all, if anything it may inspire interest in them, and sometimes sales too.” This shows that it is a known fact that these books tend to have a higher popularity ranking. Also, some authors such as R. L. Stein, the author of “Goose Bumps” books, are actually happy that their books are being challenged. It lets them know that their books are known and are being read. This shows how the plan of parents and other adults who want these books to be banned back-fires in a way. “The Fault in Our Stars” was on the top of Amazon’s teen best-sellers list. Banning books from schools and public libraries will cause kids who have an ambition to read these books, will encourage these kids to find ways how to read the book anyway. Even if banning “The Fault in Our Stars” is how adults want to come about this issue, it will not result in the way that they want it to. It will cause more people to read the books that are being challenged and others who have already read the book, to be upset, and is why this book shouldn't be banned. The opposing side, which tends to be parents and other adults, think that “The Fault in Our Stars” is an inappropriate book and has inappropriate parts in it that shouldn't be consumed by these teens and pre-teens. They argue that the book has questionable parts such as the part in which Hazel and Augustus (the main character of the book) have sex. Some people believe that this makes the book even more disliked by them, alongside the fact that the book is resolved around two terminally ill teenagers. The part where they have sex in the story may be included to show the connection and strong relationship they had with each other. The details in the story aren't graphic or gruesome. Of course no one may know the actual reasoning of including this part in the book except for the author himself, but you can infer that he included it to show their strong connectivity. “The Fault in Our Stars” also uses foul language, in which some parents are concerned about because it is in the book, it will influence the readers that it is okay for them to say this language also. But whenever foul language is used in the text, it is to so strong emotions that the character is feeling in the book. After all curse words are used to emphasize the emotion. Also the foul language is used so that the main characters can feel more like normal teenagers, which they are, even though they have cancer. In the article “The ‘Sick-Lit’ Books Aimed at Children: It’s Disturbing Phenomenon. Tales of Teenage Cancer, Self-harm, and Suicide…” the author states that “These books don’t spare any detail of the harsh realities of terminal illnesses, depression and death.” The author of this article believes that the details and topics of these types of books are too gruesome and disturbing for the minds of pre-teens and teens reading these books. She believes that they will have a negative effect on them. Overall these adults feel like books such as “The Fault in Our Stars” and others are no good and shouldn't be read. The book shows important life lessons and is why it shouldn't be banned. The book shows the life lesson of living life to the fullest because you never know what will happen. In the book both of the main characters are teenagers with cancer. The book tells about their lives together and their adventures. Like many other books, “The Fault in Our Stars” has a lesson or moral in the story. “Not only were these books ones we read intently, and over and over again, they were the books that taught us important thing” stated the author of the article, “The Banned Books We Have Loved”. The books like “The Fault in Our Stars” shouldn't be banned because they provide useful life lessons and morals. “The Fault in Our Stars” by John Green is a book that is appropriate for middle schoolers and older. It shouldn't be banned because of its content. Is the book Is consumed by sixth graders and older, they should be able to understand and should be able to read the book. Many love the book and shouldn't be deprived of reading this book freely and confidently.
